Why Lily Gladstone deserves to win the Oscar for Best Actress

Whether Lily Gladstone wins the Best Actress award is ultimately up to the Academy voters, but there is more than one reason why her performance in Martin Scorcese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' has garnered widespread acclaim.

Lily takes centre stage in 'Killers of the Flower Moon' as Mollie Kyle, a strong and independent Osage woman living in the 1920s Oklahoma. Mollie's life is upended when the discovery of oil on Osage land attracts the attention of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), an outsider who marries into the community. Gladstone imbues Mollie with a quiet strength and deep intelligence. She navigates the complexities of her newfound wealth while facing the growing threat posed by those seeking to exploit the Osage people.

Gladstone's performance is remarkable in its subtlety and emotional depth. She conveys Mollie's resilience through subtle expressions and nuanced gestures. The audience witnesses Mollie's hope turn to suspicion as she grapples with the betrayals and violence surrounding her. Gladstone's portrayal transcends the historical backdrop, making Mollie a relatable and unforgettable character whose journey resonates deeply with the audience.

Critics have lauded Gladstone's performance, praising its depth, strength, and authenticity. They've highlighted her ability to portray the emotional complexities of Mollie Kyle, the film's protagonist, with nuance and grace. However, there is one aspect of the film that I personally took issue with. It pertains not to Lily herself but rather her character, Mollie. Mollie finds herself deceived by two white men, yet the film fails to provide her with an opportunity to explain or justify her actions.
